Academic Degrees

IMPORTANT NOTICE - Not all HCC Degree and Certificate Programs are offered through Distance Education. After reviewing your desired degree program, please check the distance education course schedule to determine if any or all of the classes on your plan are offered through Distance Education. Please contact the distant education counselor if you need assistance.

The Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees can give you a good start before transferring to a four-year university. These academic degrees provide a solid foundation through a traditional liberal arts education. Studies include the humanities, social sciences, communication, mathematics and science. The liberal arts develop critical and analytic skills demanded by constantly changing environments. After you transfer to a four-year university, you may concentrate in a major area of study during your junior and senior years.

Associate in Arts (AA):
The Associate in Arts is intended primarily for students planning on transferring to a senior college or university to receive a baccalaureate degree in the following areas: education, social sciences, humanities, and fine arts. HCC, in conjunction with a number of four-year institutions, has developed specialized transfer plans for specific majors. In addition, starting fall of 1999, all Associate in Arts academic core courses taken at HCC are guaranteed to transfer and count as core at all Texas public higher educational institutions. Students should obtain appropriate transfer plans from a counselor.

Associate in Science (AS):
The Associate in Science is intended primarily for students planning on transferring to a senior college or university to receive a baccalaureate degree in the following areas: computer science, engineering, health and natural sciences, or mathematics. HCC, in conjunction with a number of four-year institutions, has developed specialized transfer plans for specific majors. In addition, starting fall of 1999, all Associate in Science academic core courses taken at HCC are guaranteed to transfer and count as core at all Texas public higher educational institutions. Students should obtain appropriate transfer plans from a counselor.
